Running water

The Old Farmhouse is located in a remarkable setting. The soil is marshy although it is only 3 km away from the south coast´s sandy beaches surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean which constantly carries more sand to the shore by its strong waves. It was not until the land was dried with ditches that the conditions of farming improved both economically and in terms of transport. With drier land it was possible to grow larger and more grassy meadows and consequently, farmers could increase their numbers of domestic animals. Rainwater for humans consumption was collected because the water in the swamp is clay mixed and therefore not suitable for cooking, drinking or washing. Nowadays fresh, cold, and pure water is piped from a source in Fljotshlid. The hot and cold water in the local houses are from the same source, and therefore possible to start your cooking with the hot water. Animals have always drunk Landeyjar´s water without any harm. But locals interest has always been limited in drinking colored water or having their  laundry spotty because of the clay that comes from the natural soil into the area´s water.
